Brother QL-820NWB via network (Cable/WiFi)

The following steps will guide you to connect the GoBright visitor registration kiosk to a Brother QL-820NWB printer via the network (Cable/WiFi).

Please note: you will need a Brother QL-820NWB printer and any of the supported labels.

Step 1: Initial configuration of the Brother QL-820NWB printer

  1. Unbox the Brother QL-820NWB printer from the box.
  2. Unbox one of the Brother labels.
  3. Insert a Brother label into the Brother QL-820NWB printer.
  4. Power the printer via the poweradapter.
  5. Use the [▲], [▼] and [OK] buttons to set language, date and time.
  6. Change settings to not automatically power off:
    • Press [Menu] to enter the settings »
    • The display shows ‘Settings’ and press [OK] »
    • Go to option ‘Auto Power Off’ with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK] »
    • Option ‘Adapter’ is selected, press [OK] »
    • Choose option ‘Off’ with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK]Brother QL-820NWB printer with 'Off' selected in Adapter settings
  7. Change settings to turn off template mode:
    • Press [Menu] to enter the settings »
    • Go to option ‘Template Settings’ with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK] »
    • Option ‘Template Mode’ is selected, press [OK] »
    • Choose option ‘Off’ with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK]

Step 2: IP configuration of the Brother QL-820NWB printer

The GoBright visitor registration kiosk can directly connect from the kiosk display to Brother QL-820NWB printer.

The following preparations need to be done by your network administrator:

  1. It is important to have a fixed IP-address for the printer, because this is needed to be able to connect to the printer.
  2. The printer will communicate via port 9100 from the display to the printer (on the local network).

Input from IT needed

Please wait for your IT department to help you out on getting a fixed IP-address! If you use the automatically assigned address, your printer will stop working after a certain amount of days, because the IP-address changed.

In the mean time you might be able to gather some data the IT departments needs, but you might need to discuss this with your IT department as well.

Choose how you want the printer to connect to the network, and follow the steps:

Connect the printer via a network cable, static IP via MAC Address (recommended)

The IT department needs the MAC Address of the wired network adapter of the printer to provide you a static IP-address automatically. This is done by the IT department by assigning a static IP-address for the MAC Address of the printer in the corparate network DHCP configuration.

Follow these steps to find the necessary information:

  1. Turn on the printer, and make sure the paper is loaded
  2. Make sure the network cable is connected to the printer
  3. Let the printer print out the settings
    • Press [Menu] to enter the settings »
    • Go to option ‘Information’ with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK] »
    • Select option ‘Print Configuration’ and press [OK] »
    • Option ‘All’ is selected, press [OK] »
    • Option ‘Start’ is selected, press [OK] »
  4. The printer now prints several pieces of paper, with all the settings of the printer
  5. To get the MAC Address:
    • Look for ‘NETWORK CONFIGURATION’ and then ‘MAC Address’
    • This will look similar to this example:

      <<NETWORK CONFIGURATION>>
      <Interface> WiredLAN on
      ...
      <MAC Address> [MAC Address of the printer, format: XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX]...

  6. Provide the MAC Address to the IT department, they will be able to provide you with a static IP address
  7. The IT department should also login to the web-admin-panel of the printer and set an admin password

Connect the printer via a WiFi network

The IT department needs the MAC Address of the WiFi network adapter of the printer to provide you a static IP-address.

Follow these steps to find the necessary information:

  1. Turn on the printer, and make sure the paper is loaded
  2. Make sure the network cable is connected to the printer
  3. Let the printer print out the settings
    • Press [Menu] to enter the settings »
    • Go to option ‘Information’ with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK] »
    • Select option ‘Print Configuration’ and press [OK] »
    • Option ‘All’ is selected, press [OK] »
    • Option ‘Start’ is selected, press [OK] »
  4. The printer now prints several pieces of paper, with all the settings of the printer
  5. To get the MAC Address:
    • Look for ‘WLAN’ and then ‘MAC Address’
    • This will look similar to this example:

      [WLAN]<MAC ADDRESS> =[MAC Address of the printer, format: XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX]<NODE NAME> =...
      <COMMUNICATION TYPE> =INFRASTRUCTURE
      ...
  6. Provide the MAC Address to the IT department, they will be able to provide you with a static IP address
  7. The IT department should also login to the web-admin-panel of the printer and set an admin password

Now connect the printer to the desired WiFi network:

  1. Turn on the printer, and make sure the paper is loaded
  2. Turn on WiFi on the printer
    • Press [Menu] to enter the settings »
    • Go to option ‘WLAN’ with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK] »
    • Option ‘WLAN (On/Off)’ is selected, press [OK] »
    • Select option ‘On’ and press [OK] »
    • The printer will now turn on its WiFi capabilities
  3. Now connect to the desired WiFi network
    • Press [Menu] to enter the settings »
    • Go to option ‘WLAN’ with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK] »
    • Go to option ‘Infra Manual Setting’ with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK] »
    • The printer will search for available WiFi networks »
    • Select the desired WiFi network use with the [▲][▼] buttons and press [OK] »
    • Now enter the network password:
      • use the [▲][▼] buttons to change character
      • use [Menu] button to mode (A=Capital/a=Normal/1=Digits/&=Special]
      • use [OK] to proceed to the next character and to save the password when completed
    • The entered passwork will now show, press [OK] to confirm »
    • The printer will now connect to the WiFi network (this will take a while)

Step 3: Configure the GoBright visitor registration kiosk

  1. Open the GoBright device app on the display if it is not open already
  2. Enter the settings of the app (read: how to exit kiosk mode)
  3. Scroll down to the ‘PRINTER’ section, and press ‘Configuration’, the a popup window will open
  4. Choose ‘CHANGE’
  5. Choose ‘Network (Brother QL-820NWB)’
  6. Select the applicable label (note that the GoBright App version 6.0 or higher is required to configure labels and orientiation)

  7. Select the correct orientation
    List of orientations
  8. Enter the fixed IP-address of the printer (as retreived from the IT department, see step 2 above)
  9. Configuration will be saved
  10. Press ‘TEST’ to print a test badge

Step 4: Happy badge printing!
